F.A.Q. - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Q: Why does HIV-Free exist?
  • A: Due to the rapidly growing rate of the HIV/AIDS virus, we saw a need to develop a system that would put into play a preventative measure of slowing down the spread of the virus.

  • Q: How much does it cost to become a member of HIV-Free?
  • A: The cost to join HIV-Free is $24.95 per year.

  • Q: How long does the HIV-Free membership last?
  • A: The membership lasts for one year, and can be renewed every 12 months.

  • Q :Is there a need to be HIV tested more than once a year?
  • A: Yes.  As many times you feel it is needed. But our system requires you to be tested at least once a year.

  • Q: Can a husband and wife join together as one member?
  • A: The answer is NO. Each member must obtain their own HIV test and apply for their own membership card.

  • Q: Can our kids join and how old do they have to be?
  • A: Yes. Any parent can sign up their child age 10 and above.

  • Q: If I am not engaged in a relationship should I still become a member of HIV-Free?
  • A: Yes. Due to the fact that there are other ways to contract the HIV/AIDS virus, it will still be necessary to be tested. If you decide to engage in a relationship with someone, you will already have your card and know your HIV status.

  • Q: Do I really need proof using a membership card?
  • A: Yes. The information showing your HIV status will give your dating partner peace of mind. The card is a very tactful way of accomplishing this.

  • Q: What if my partner refuses to become a member of HIV-Free?
  • A: The system is designed for everyone to show proof that they are free of the HIV/AIDS virus. Therefore, if a person does not want to show proof it would be un-safe and unwise for you to engage in any kind of sexual relations with them.

  • Q: Can this card be used for reasons other than to show proof of your HIV-Free status?
  • A: Yes. Employment reasons, medical emergencies, and for dating purposes.

  • Q: What are my chances of contracting HIV/AIDS without using the HIV-Free card?
  • A: At the end of 2003, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS with 24% - 27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV status. Don't let this happen to you.

  • Q: What if my HIV-Free card gets lost or stolen?
  • A: You must notify HIV-Free immediately.  HIV-Free will replace your card, assign a new ID number and cancel the original card.

  • Q: What guarantee does an HIV Free member have when they meet another HIV Free member that they will not contract the HIV virus within a 90 day period?
  • A: Your guarantee relies on you and your partner or the HIV Free member that you've chosen and whether or not you are both practicing safe sex protocols. Your own HIV test does not matter alone, but also the results of your partner. If you have any concerns about your partner's previous lifestyle, HIV Free recommends that both of you have HIV tests every six months until you are both sure and satisfied with your status reports. We can assume that HIV Free members are not people who are HIV positive (at the time they become members) and seeking to spread the virus throughout the community. If you encounter any person that you consider a potential dating partner, you as an HIV Free member need to make sure you ask for the ID# of that person, go on the HIV Free website and verify their HIV status. If they cannot or will not provide a #, or if they tell you they cannot remember it, HIV Free  recommends that you not have any sexual contact with that person. Legally,  a person does not have to tell you they are HIV positive.
